Housing Our Stories

I am a high school student interested in history and housing. As a 5 year old, I volunteered at shelters for the unhoused with my family. These experiences influenced my belief that everyone has a right to the basic need of housing. I am also a student of history.

This has taught me that true history must include all voices.

Housing Our Stories chronicles and highlights the voices of D.C. residents within diverse housing environments with respect and with their consent.

These include residents in affordable, transitional, and inclusionary zoning housing, and other forms of assisted housing.

Part 1 of Housing Our Stories: Voices from Highland

For the first installment of Housing Our Stories, I had the privilege of recording oral history interviews of residents in an affordable housing complex in the District of Columbia.

I am grateful they gave me permission to interview them and to share their stories. I am also grateful to Ms. Carol, the residential council president at the time of these interviews for her encouragement and ongoing support.

I am still learning how to conduct oral history interviews, so please bear with me!!

Part 2 of Housing Our Stories: Voices From La Casa

For Part 2 of Housing Our Stories, I had the privilege of speaking with some current residents of La Casa Transitional Rehabilitation Program of the Coalition for the Homeless. La Casa provides transitional housing for men experiencing homelessness to help them achieve self-sufficiency. I am so grateful they took their time to share some of their histories with me. I am also appreciative of Ms. McCraney, the program director for her support.
